So, I revised three SGA stories I wrote almost 20 years ago. It's shocking to me that it's been that long since Stargate Atlantis first started airing (2004), and I fell so deeply under its spell that I wrote fanfiction for it before the first season was halfway done. I've not had that happen before or since. Part of that was because I'd never so fully loved every character on a show. Even the minor characters were a joy. And, of course, part of that was because the show was witty and fast paced without much depth except as conveyed by the actors (the 42 minute run time never giving enough time for introspection). These days we get shows that are all about the mind, depth and introspection...where's the fun in that? :P

Anyway, word on the street is the FFN is dying (and the ads are a horror show if you're not using the mobile app). So, for fun, I revised Hidden Resources (this one had some major edits), People Watching and Bioluminescence and posted them to A03. I'm going to post Choosing His Team next. All light fare if anyone is bored and is feeling nostalgic. I have three more from first season to revise, then I'll get to the crazy long ones I wrote in Season 2. Those scare me a little.

I also, for kicks, started reading the tie-in novels. A friend had sent me the first 7 a long time ago, and I just kindled 8 and 9. They're so weird. Some are fantastic, some are really not. I can't decide if its just me, but I really disliked two of them, found two more annoying, and really enjoyed the other four (three in particular were fantastic, though, man, did I want the awesome "Mirror Mirror" to have more of an ending - it was very true to the show as a result; never dealing with the fallout). I understand that another set of novels ("Legacy") were also written as an unofficial season 6, but I don't know if I'm brave enough. If anyone's read them, I'd love to know what you think.

I’m so excited you have been posting and revising. :). It’s so much more fun to not do this alone.

I'm so happy to see the old SGA fic crowd around again lately. :D

The tie-in books are definitely all over the place! I think Mirror, Mirror was one of the ones I did like. I read some of the Legacy books (there's a whole backstory there, I knew some of the authors on LJ) but my general impression was that they didn't like Rodney all that much, and they definitely chose to center other characters and also went in a bit of a John/Teyla direction, which wasn't my thing at the time. It was more like an after-the-show AU that went off in a particular direction than more of what we wanted from the show.

Yeah, it was clear that Rodney was not a fav character and I wasn't keen on the John/Teyla direction either. It just didn't feel like SGA to me :(

Excited that you're revising the fics!! I shall have to find time to read them again, I always enjoyed your fics!!

I seem to remember liking the two books by Martha Wells, even if she seems to have a SG1 style a stargate in 'Reliquary' rather than the SGA stargates, but the book was so good I was willing to forgive her that. I recently found out about her sci-fi series called 'The Murderbot Diaries', and have very much enjoyed them too! She has some fantasy books, but that's not really my genre so can't say how good they are.

I was not a fan of the Legacy books. They didn't seem to like Rodney and it just didn't feel like SGA to me. I wish I could remember which of the other books I enjoyed, but it was a while ago I read them and I forget.

I've read the Legacy series and enjoy them, but yes, they do veer a bit towards John/Teyla in the middle, although they go back to gen again by the end. I always wondered, since they were officially sanctioned tie-ins, if TPTB told the writers the series was getting too shippy and got them to make it more gen again, but who knows. Rodney's certainly prominent towards the end due to a lot of whump, but I liked how his arc ended in the series. I've read the series twice, now, and I appreciate how the Wraith aren't just vilified and their culture is explored with some interesting worldbuilding and a move towards a non-genocidal eventual detente in Pegasus between Wraith and humanity.
